King Henry VIII needed a son to inherit the throne, but his wife Catherine of Aragon only had one surviving child: a girl named Mary. King Henry tried to convince Pope Clement VII to annul his marriage, but the pope refused.

Interesting facts: At the time, Christians couldn’t get divorced. Because Henry wanted to remarry to have a son, he needed the marriage annulled, or made invalid. This would allow the king to remarry.
